Everything You Need to Know About Spark Plugs
Engines burn fuel and oxygen. It's how they generate the power they need to run. No engine can do this on its own, though. The factory spark plugs on top of its cylinder head help.
How They Work
Turn your key in its ignition lock cylinder. The ignition switch triggers, and several ignition parts, such as your battery, starter motor, solenoid, and ignition coil, work together to send electricity to the plug leads. When that charge reaches them, the air and gas ignite. The combustion process begins, releasing power. Your engine pistons pump, your crankshaft turns, the many other parts that move your Honda get moving, it gets going, and, thanks to the alternator, it keeps going.
Without spark plugs, though, no vehicle could start at all. To make things worse, they all go bad sooner or later, either because of degradation or age. Luckily, a set of specific symptoms will let you know that's happening.
The Signs They're Failing
- Corroded or overly widened leads
- Weak electrical conductivity
- Hard starts
- Engine misfires and failure
- Rough idling
- Worsening gas mileage
- Acceleration problems
A broken spark plug, however, is extremely dangerous: it can lead to severe engine cylinder damage.
How Long They Last Otherwise
For millions of ignitions, luckily, and up to 100,000 miles. Those that aren't the regular copper kind are either platinum or iridium and extended-life, too. Whichever you've got or plan to use, just be sure to replace them as they near their recommended mileage limit.
What Your Honda Needs
That depends on your model. Genuine spark plugs work best for your brand's vehicles either way.
Why You Should Buy Genuine OEM
They're designed compatible from the get-go -- something that can't always be said for aftermarket spark plugs.
